Louisiana Experiments With Privatizing Public Education
Jun 12, 2012Reuters – Beginning this fall, lower and middle-income families will receive vouchers to attend more than 120 private schools in Louisiana. Next year, the program will be open to all students, allowing them to pay for additional classes and apprenticeships not currently offered in public schools. If a student uses a voucher, their public school loses state funding. The plan is expected to create a bottleneck at Louisiana’s most prestigious private schools, which have very few slots open. Religious schools are expected to benefit greatly, since they have the most openings for new students, though teachers and parents question much of their educational material. The state education department has approved all texts, but will be visiting schools again to review school capacity limits. The Louisiana Federation of Teachers is considering filing suit to stop the action. Any student accepting the voucher must take a state assessment test at the end of school year, tests that are not currently required of private schools. The success of Louisiana’s new voucher system may widely fall on the results of those tests. For more, read Louisiana Makes Bold Bid to Privatize Public Education.
