Stephen Colbert’s Super PAC Leading Super Charge in Campus Political Activity
May 15, 2012Huffington Post – Stephen Colbert deliberately absurd Super PAC is leading a serious groundswell among college students to create their own Super PACs. Colbert’s Super PAC, Making a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow has inspired spin-offs at some of the nation’s top campuses, including Princeton, Georgetown, University of California-Davis and Penn State. The movement began at the University of Texas-Austin, leadingled The Colbert Report to create a kit for helping college students create their own Super PACs. Super PACs are political action committees that can raise unlimited funds to advertise for political causes, though they cannot coordinate efforts with politicians or endorse them. After being made legal by the Supreme Court in 2010 (Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission), late-night comedian and talk show host Colbert created his own organization to point out inconsistencies and loopholes in the law. Colbert-inspired Super PACs now make up 2.5% of all Super PACs and have created continued political activity among college students.
