Students Struggle to Understand, Explain Science Experiments
Jun 21, 2012Associated Press – It’s an age-old problem – getting the right answer without being able to explain how you got it. The is problem is plaguing 4th-, 8th- and 12th-grade students according to a new study released by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (better known as the Nation’s Report Card). Students in those grades could often give the right answer to science questions without being able to explain how the answer could be derived from actual experiments. They struggle to fully explain their conclusions in lab reports and essays. Critics argue this is an indictment of the teaching profession, who fail to completely delve into their subject and show students how to conduct, re-create, or draw implications from their experiments.
