President Proposes Master Teacher Corps to Teach Math and Science

Jul 19, 2012

Associated Press – President Obama released a proposal on Wednesday to boost student grades in math and science: $1 billion in funding to create a Master Teacher Corps. Teachers selected for the program will receive an additional $20,000 in salary per year but must commit to the program for several years. The program will be in effect in all 50 states and employ 2,500 teachers. Republicans argue that there are too many teacher quality programs already and this proposal is a waste of resources. American math and science scores have been slipping for decades. By some estimates, the United States ranks 25th in the world in mathematics.
