Faulty Data Again Leads to Mistaken US News Ranking
May 15, 2012Associated Press – US News & World Report’s ranking of US high schools, like its list of top US colleges, contained erroneous information. Green Valley High School of Henderson, Nev., was ranked as the 13th best high school in the country when it should have been ranked outside the top 100. The error was caused by faulty information provided by the Nevada Department of Education and affected five other Nevada high schools. The error appears to be in earnest, unlike deliberately falsified data in the college rankings, when an official supplied the wrong file concerning schools in Clark County. US News has not yet said if it will change this year’s rankings or make the adjustment next year. For more, read State, Fed Errors Rank Nev. High School 13th in US.
RSC reminds students to make their own list of top colleges, the ones that are right for you. Rankings can be a good place to get information on a college, but they are not ironclad.
